iMessage export tools for legal use, compared

Checked against each vendor's website in September 2026

If your messages are on a Mac and you want Bates numbers, a source hash, and a declaration page built in, Legal Message Export is made for exactly that. If you need to work from an iPhone, want WhatsApp too, or need a timezone on every message, iMazing is more capable. If you want a simple, inexpensive PDF from either an iPhone backup or a Mac, Decipher TextMessage is a solid choice. Details below.

I make one of these, so read this with that in mind. I've tried to describe the others fairly, from their own published information. Features and prices change, so check each vendor's site before you buy. If I've got something wrong, email support@appcamp.com and I'll fix it.

Legal Message Export

A small Mac app built for one job: turning a Messages conversation into a PDF that's ready to hand to a lawyer. Every export has a chain-of-custody cover page (participants, date range, message count, Bates range, source path, SHA-256 hash, and import and export dates), Bates numbers on every page, and an optional fill-in-and-sign declaration in US, Canadian, UK, or generic wording.

Good fit if: your messages sync to a Mac; you're preparing for a lawyer or a court; you can't justify a subscription or forensic tool; or you care that nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Not a fit if: you have no Mac, need WhatsApp or other apps, need CSV or Excel for analysis, or need the time zone printed on each message (it currently uses the Mac's time zone without printing it).

iMazing

A mature, broad iPhone management tool for Mac and Windows: backups, transfers, and exports of messages, WhatsApp, call history, and more. For messages, it can show the time and time zone on every message, include contact details, and add a metadata footer with the device name, serial number, and database dates. Its business subscription, aimed at attorneys, adds e-discovery formats like RSMF and signed PDFs.

Good fit if: you work from iPhones rather than Macs, need WhatsApp or call logs, or are a firm with ongoing e-discovery needs.

Consider: it's subscription-only as of mid-2025, and it's a large general-purpose tool if all you need is one conversation.

Decipher TextMessage

A long-standing, inexpensive tool for Mac and Windows that exports text messages from iPhone backups, and from the Messages app on a Mac, to PDF, CSV, HTML, or text, with photos and attachments. Many people have used it to print texts for court.

Good fit if: you want a simple, low-cost PDF, on Windows or from an iPhone backup.

Consider: it doesn't advertise Bates numbering, a source hash, or a declaration page, so you or your lawyer would add those separately if needed.

And when none of these is enough

If authenticity is seriously contested, a forensic examiner using professional extraction tools, and able to testify, is the right route. That's a different category, with a different price. Your lawyer will know when it's worth it.
